We’re looking for an experienced Field Party Chief to join our Cardiff team. The Field Party Chief supports the engineering and survey department, with the ability to independently manage projects while working with various consultants. The Field Party Chief is expected to understand high level field procedures for projects related to mapping, construction staking, boundary surveys, land development, ALTA Surveys, forensic surveys and related projects. This position is considered safety-sensitive and must follow all company and Cal/OSHA safety requirements. WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned field crews, including oversight of maintaining surveying instruments, training and mentoring junior level employees.
  • Coordinate with contractors to understand and provide survey services.
  • Understands Field-2-Finish coding, with processing of field work from start to finish.
  • Ability to identify potential issues, conflicts in plans, site control, line of sight, equipment standards, equipment limitations etc.
  • Make calculations in the field based on conditions.
  • Oversee cut-sheets and ensure quality control.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, grading plans, architectural, structural and utility plans, including legal descriptions and field notes by others.
  • Ensure field notes are clearly written, supplemental information clearly identified.
  • Assist and ensure all inventory and equipment is tracked.
  • Communicate professionally in the field.
  • Knowledge of calibration techniques of field equipment, leveling checks and traverse closures.
  • Must follow IIPP, Heat Illness Prevention Plan, and Cal/OSHA protocols.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5–10 years of experience as a Party Chief.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Ability to follow highly technical instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Basic math and plan-reading skills.

  • Reliability, punctuality, and commitment to safety.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Carlson, Civil3D, Trimble Business Center, Trimble Access and Trimble IBSS preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of total station, GPS and data collection, with high level ability for new field equipment and technology.

Physical Requirements

  • The employee must be able to:
  • Lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Walk, stand, kneel, bend, stoop, climb, and reach for extended periods.
  • Work outdoors in varying climates and terrains.
  • Operate vehicles and field equipment safely.
  • Maintain vision and hearing needed for safety and measurement.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 30 lbs.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.

Work Environment

  • Field-based role with exposure to traffic, construction equipment, weather, and uneven surfaces.

Travel Requirements

  • Daily travel to job sites; occasional extended days.

Compensation

PLSA is committed to pay equity, and as part of this commitment, have provided the annual base compensation range of $50.00 – $60.00 per hour depending upon experience (performance bonuses are in addition to base compensation).
